Abstract

The normal anionic gap metabolic acidosis is characterized by a primarydecrease in bicarbonate concentration associated with hyperchloremia. In thisdisorder, plasma bicarbonate decreases and is replaced by chloride to maintainelectroneutrality. Consequently, these disorders are also referred to ashyperchloremic metabolic acidosis.
