Emotional Distress, Resilience and Mental Well-being among TB Patients in Peshawar

Background: Tuberculosis is the most common disease in the world which affects most people all over the world, which has a strong relation with psychological issues. The term "resilience" describes a person's capacity to grow in a constructive way when faced with stress and hardship. However, resilience may be impacted by a variety of factors, including mental health, the stigma associated with TB, relationships with family and friends, and the capacity to participate in work and education. Objective: The objective of the present study was to assess the emotional distress, resilience and mental well-being among tuberculosis patients in Peshawar. Methodology: The cross-sectional study was carried out at different hospitals in Peshawar (LRH, CMH, KTH, RMI, and North West Hospital). Between July 2021 to December 2021data was collected and analyzed on different Scales. Emotional Distress Inventory (PEDI), The Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale (WEMWBS), and Brief Resilience Scale (BRS). T-Test (independent sample t-test), and Pearson’s correlation were used for analysis of data. Result: The sample of the present study was 200 (N=200) diagnosed patients which are equally divided into two groups’ male adolescents, and adults (n=100) and female adolescents, and adults (n=100). A purposive sampling technique will be used to select participants from different hospitals in Peshawar. The age range of the sample was 13-45 years. Results showed that Adolescent TB patients scored significantly low on the resilience scale as compared to adult TB Patients, and adolescents scored low on the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being scale as compared to adults, which means that “Adolescents TB patients will score low on resilience and mental well-being scale as compare to adults TB Patientsâ€. TB patients score high on the perceived emotional distress scale as compared to adult TB patients, which means that “Adolescent TB patients will score high on the emotional distress scale as compared to adult TB patientsâ€.There is a negative correlation between resilience and mental well-being among TB patients, which means that “There is a positive correlation between resilience and mental well-being among TB patientsâ€. Conclusion: The current study concluded that Adolescent Tb patients have significant levels of emotional distress as compared to adults and Adolescents have low levels of well-being and resilience as compared to adults. The significance of this study is that TB patients not only need medication but also need instant psychological support. In the future people will not only be able to treat clinical symptoms but they can also treat psychological symptoms as well.References
